In the quaint village of Gastouri you will see the palace that was built by the Empress of Austria Elisabeth, known as Sissi. An admirer of the mythic hero Achilles, she named the palace after him. You will discover the lush frescoed rooms of this neoclassical white mansion and also enjoy the Italian terraced gardens with views over the town and the coast. Fine sculptures are dotted around the gardens, many of which feature characters from Greek mythology, including Achilles.

Mon Repos Palace was built in 1828 for the second British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, Sir Frederic Adams. The second son of King George I, George II, was born here in 1869 as well as Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburg, in 1921. The Greek Royal family used to spend their summer holidays at this palace, hosting eminent guests such us Tito of Yugoslavia, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Nasser of Egypt.
