Achilleion Palace

Scroll to discover

The stunning Achilleion Palace makes travelers go back in time.

Located in the area of Gastouri to the south of Corfu, this palace was constructed by the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth, commonly known as Sissi. Sissi “fell in love” with the beauties, culture and traditions of this island and decided to construct this palace, which used to serve as her holiday home. After the death of Sissy the palace was purchased by William II, the Kaiser of Germany.

The palace features pieces of art related to Greek mythology.

Both the interior and exterior parts of the palace share common characteristics, since pieces of art from Greek history and especially mythology dominate it. It is notable that the name Achilleion derives from the hero of the Greek mythology, Achilles, whose oil painting is still a gem of this palace. In the gardens of the palace there are various statues and sculptures of ancient Greek gods and goddesses.
